DESCRIPTION

A LAPTOP IS REQUIRED FOR THIS COURSE.  IT MUST HAVE POWER POINT AND A PDF VIEWER INSTALLED.  COURSE MATERIAL WILL BE PROVIDED ON A USB THUMB DRIVE.

 

ATTENDEES MUST BE PROFICENT IN ADMINISTERING THE SFST BATTERY OF TESTS.  ON THE 1ST DAY OF CLASS ATTENDEES MUST DEMONSTRATE THIS PROFICENCENCY TO COURSE INSTRUCTORS IN ORDER TO REMAIN IN THE CLASS.

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A 50 HOUR COURSE OVER 6 DAYS THAT INCLUDES EVENING HOURS, and A SATURDAY CLASS SESSION. There are 4-8 hour days and 2-9 hour days.  Please SEE the SCHEDULE BELOW.

Wednesday: 8am - 5pm

Thursday: 1pm-10pm - with a Dinner Break

Friday: 2p-11pm (WORKING IN DRINKING LAB, NO DINNER BREAK, 9 HOUR DAY)

Saturday: 1p-10pm (WORKING IN DRINKING LAB, NO DINNER BREAK, 9 HOUR DAY)

Sunday and Monday OFF

Tuesday: 8am – 5pm

Wednesday: 8am - 5pm

This is an intense 50 hour course that includes classroom instruction and practical application. It is designed as a "train the trainer" seminar, and upon successful completion, the student will be eligible to be a TCOLE Certified SFST Instructor. 

During this training the student will be trained to correctly administer and instruct the SFST Practitioner and SFST Update training course curriculums.  Attendees will be provided with all the necessary materials and resources necessary to teach SFST courses upon completion.

Topics covered:

  • Concepts of adult learning
  • SFST Curriculum package
  • Techniques for effective classroom and courtroom presentation
  • Managing live alcohol workshops, which will include 2 actual dosing labs during the course
  • Video options for SFST training
  • Teaching preparation techniques

There will be 2 written exams and 2 practical exams that students must pass to complete the course.

PREREQUISITES

ATTENDEES MUST BE PROFICENT IN ADMINISTERING THE SFST BATTERY OF TESTS.  ON THE 1ST DAY OF CLASS ATTENDEES MUST DEMONSTRATE THIS PROFICENCENCY TO COURSE INSTRUCTORS IN ORDER TO REMAIN IN THE CLASS.

Attendees must ALSO:

  • hold an SFST Practitioner or Proficiency Certificate
  • have at least 3 YEARS of experience as a Standardized Field Sobriety Testing practitioner
  • see the TCOLE requirements below to receive and activate the SFST Instructor Certificate

 221.33 To qualify for a standardized field sobriety instructor certificate, an applicant must meet all proficiency requirements including:

(1) successful completion of the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Practitioner Course, 2176 or 2067; or the SFST taken with Academy.

(2) at least three years’ experience as a Standardized Field Sobriety Testing practitioner:

(3) current instructor license or certificate issued by the commission;

(4) successful completion of the commission approved SFST Instructor Course, 1016 or Drug Recognition Expert (D.R.E.) Instructor Course 1015; and

(5) submit to TCOLE a SFST Instructor License application (found on TCOLE's website) and a $35 payment.
