DESCRIPTION

The Fitness Wellness Unit (FWU) within the Education, Training and Research (ETR) division of the Texas
Department of Public Safety (TX DPS) provides training on the background, development of policy and
implementation of physical fitness testing and assessment within TX DPS. During this training, the
Officer Fitness and Wellness Program and how it aligns with the 6th pillar of the 21st Century Policing and
supports de-escalation through the components of physical fitness testing and assessment, wellness,
resiliency, and nutrition are conferred. Additionally, how TX DPS has navigated the variety of hurdles
inherent in creating and sustaining a fitness and wellness policy supported by EEO, Legal, Risk
Management, ADA and HR that is now mandated in Texas by Government Code 614.172 are discussed.
This training is provided to outside agencies at no cost for the training as a part of TX DPS’s core value of
teamwork as defined by how TX DPS works with and collaborates with outside agencies. Through this
collaboration, fitness policies and procedures of all agencies are strengthened through consistency and
continuity.
