DESCRIPTION

"Changing the Response to Sexual Assault One Reaction at a Time"

 

Someone you love, someone you know or someone you’ve encountered has likely been a victim of sexual assault, unwanted sexual advances or sexual stalking or bullying.  The response to rape and sexual assault is often different than to other crimes.  Have you ever heard “My daughter died in a car crash…Well, that’s what she gets for not taking the bus.”  NO.  But victims of sexual violence often face blame and shame.  Join us in changing the way we respond to sexual assault:  Start by Believing.

The Start by Believing Awareness Campaign by creating a positive community response, can:

  • Increase disclosure to family, friends and trusted others
  • Increase likelihood of seeking medical forensic examinations and reporting sexual assaults to law enforcement
  • Increase participation in and cooperation with criminal justice process
  • Increase help-seeking for victims from professionals with trauma understanding
  • Increase accountability for offenders, preventing future assaults

This Start by Believing training will address the purpose and impact of a Start by Believing Campaign, how it contributes to a comprehensive, thorough investigation, the importance of a victim-centered, trauma informed response, and how to launch a SBB campaign in your community, on your campus, or at your agency or organization.
